Galley Common Class

Galley Common Dojo

Hanshi Phil RandelI started training at the age of 14 with Keith Wilson in his garage as it was something different to all the other sports and activities around at the time. I have been an active member of the Gao Shan Pai Wu Shu system for 41 years and have seen many changes in that time. I have trained in Okinawan Karate and have trained with some world renowned Sensei's, most notably Iga honi Sensei, goju ryu master. I also trained with the late Soki Tom Boldwin, with whom I became a member of the World British Federation of Martial Arts (WBFOMA) I also hold an 8th Dan in Ryu Kyu Karate with Hansi Mick Benfell and was the 1991 Tamishi Wari Champion.

In my 41 years of training I have trained 19 senior and 7 junior Black belts and started successful clubs in Atherstone and also Nuneaton. I ran the club in Atherstone from 1979 - 1982 before coming to Galley Common and to the church hall. Before this Gao Shan had many different homes over the years from our humble beginings in a Garage to the salut club, the Camphill community centre to Hatterspace but the Church hall has been the main Dojo. The church Hall in Galley common was nearly knocked down if not for the support and help form the students at our club who voulenteered their time and effort to help rebuild the hall. From painting and decorating to rewireing the electrics this club has been a big part of all our lives. 41 years on and I still love the Martial Arts and Gao shan as much today as I did the day I started.
